Cent Mille Milliards de poèmes di Raymond Queneau è un'opera sperimentale, pubblicata nel 1960, che consiste di 10 sonetti, ognuno composto di 14 versi intercambiabili, nel senso che l'ennesimo verso di un sonetto può essere utilizzato come ennesimo verso di tutti gli altri sonetti. Con i 140 versi dati è dunque possibile comporre un numero di sonetti differenti pari a 100.000.000.000.000 (centomila miliardi), cioè 10 elevato alla 14ª potenza. Nell'opera a stampa (edita da Gallimard) figura un sonetto su ogni pagina dispari. Le pagine sono sfrangiate in strisce orizzontali, in modo che ogni striscia contenga un verso e possa essere sollevata per rendere visibile i versi sottostanti dello stesso ordine.
Ogni esempio di testo costruito secondo regole precise apre la molteplicità "potenziale" di tutti i testi virtualmente scrivibili secondo quelle regole, e di tutte le letture virtuali di quei testi.

Highlights on show include a 4000-year-old bowl inscribed with a language that still resists deciphering, an unpublished Tolkien notebook revealing how he experimented with Esperanto before creating his fictional Elvish languages, and an experimental 1950s computer programme designed to generate love letters. Exploring themes of multiculturalism and identity, the exhibition considers issues that are more relevant than ever as Britain approaches Brexit. It also tackles the tricky question of how to translate for the distant future.
